Tender Loving Care Dolls
One of the most popular programs in terms of volunteers is the Tender Loving Care Dolls Program. While socializing with friends, the volunteers assemble to sew, stuff, dress and distribute special hand-crafted dolls for agencies in Montgomery County that counsel children. The dolls are dressed in handmade clothes, and the dolls’ hair is carefully crafted in a variety of colors. In addition, the dolls are made in such a way that one side has a smiling face, and the other side has a sad face. This provides the counselors with a tool to encourage children to begin to express their feelings during these difficult times, whether they feel happy or whether they feel sad. In addition, the dolls are used for grief counseling and in a hospice summer camp for children.
In recent years the program has been expanded to provide the “comfort” dolls to special needs individuals, as well as those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
In the 2015-2016 fiscal year, over 350 individuals were served.
